Make an Apron

An apron is probably one of the most practical handmade gifts you can make for that special person. Most people think of aprons as something that is worn by mothers and grandmothers in the kitchen, but just about everyone can benefit from an apron. Men who like to barbecue can find a great apron useful especially an apron that has lots of pockets for holding items. Aprons for kids can also be very useful when they are doing arts and crafts. An apron for a woman means no more cooking splatters on their clothes.

To make your apron follow these simple instructions that can be changed to fit all shapes and sized.
Choosing the fabric for your handmade apron project is very important. For the kitchen you can use sturdy cottons, or for outside work like gardening you can use a denim or canvas. Other items you will need are sewing thread to match your fabric, paper to make your pattern, pins, accessories to decorate your apron and a sewing machine.

You can purchase a ready made pattern but you will get a better fit if you make your own and it is not difficult to do.

Before you start make sure that you pre-wash your fabric.

To make the apron pattern, fold the piece of paper lengthwise. This will allow you to cut the shape with one cut, making the two sides symmetrical. What you will be shaping when you make the cut will be the bib section of the apron. The bib for an adult sized apron will need to be about 9 inches wide. Measure from the fold of the paper about 5-1/2 inches in. This is half the width of the bib plus an inch to fold under twice to form a hem. The piece you will cut off the side to shape the bib will be a curve shape with the tip of the curve being where the ties will be attached. The length of the curve shape should be about 12″, and the width will be from the spot you marked 5-1/2 inches from the fold to the outside edge of the paper. When these pieces are cut off, the result should be an apron shaped paper pattern.

Fold the fabric you have chosen for your apron project in half, pin your paper pattern to the fabric and cut out your apron. You will also need extra fabric to make a strap for around the neck, ties for the back, and pockets. You can also use a contrast fabric for your ties and pockets.

Now it is time to finish the edges of your apron. Fold under all the raw edges, press and sew. To make your straps cut two pieces of fabric approximately 36″ long by 4″ wide, fold lengthwise right sides together and sew a 1/4″ seam along the length, turn inside out and press. Attach the ties to the waist. Now cut another piece of fabric 4″ wide by approximately 18″ long, fold in half, right sides together, sew a 1/4″ seam, turn right side out, press and attach to the top of the bib.

Now that you have your basic apron made you can get creative. Pockets on an apron are certainly very useful. If your apron is for a lady you can add lace trims, if for a man you can appliqu├ęs of hammers or soccer balls etc. if for a child you can add their favorite cartoon characters.

An apron is one handmade gift that most people will appreciate.
